The DC Metro area is full of nonprofit, social sector and non-governmental organizations. Some do great work, and others don't. Wouldn't be it be nice to know which is which?

Increasingly, foundations and individual donors are trying to figure how to measure the impact and effectiveness of nonprofits, in order to steer resources to where they can do the most good. But which measurements are the best indicators? And how can organizations best serve all their stakeholders when the definition of "effectiveness" varies?

Jacob Harold (@JacobCHarold) is the President & CEO of GuideStar, the largest source of data about nonprofits. Jacob came to GuideStar in 2012 from the Hewlett Foundation, where he led grantmaking for the Philanthropy Program. He has also worked as a climate change campaigner for Rainforest Action Network and Greenpeace USA. He has an MBA from Stanford and a BA from Duke.

Jennifer Lentfer (@intldogooder) is the Director of Communications atIDEX - International Development Exchange, the co-author of The Development Element: Guidelines for the Future of Communicating About the End of Global Poverty, and creator of the How Matters blog. Jennifer has also advised and written about monitoring and evaluation at the American Red Cross, Oxfam America and the Firelight Foundation. She has a BA from Nebraska Wesleyan and a Master's in International Development from Pitt.

Victoria Vrana (@vicvrana) is a Senior Program Officer on theCharitable Sector Support team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which she joined in 2011. Previously, Victoria was VP, Communications and Assessment at Venture Philanthropy Partners, responsible for VPP's overall communications and assessment of its portfolio performance. Her interest in using communications and technology for social change began at the Network of East-West Women, where she led an online network linking women in post-Soviet countries. Victoria studied in Germany and Hungary, and has a degree in comparative literature from UC Davis. 

Dennis Whittle (@DennisWhittle) is co-founder of GlobalGiving, where he was CEO from 2000-2010. Currently he is director and co-Founder of Feedback Labs, a consortium of like-minded organizations committed to making governments, NGOs and donors more responsive to the needs of their constituents. Dennis served recently as Executive Chairman of Ashoka Changemakers, and he has taught at UNC-Chapel Hill and at Princeton University. He received his MPA from Princeton and a BA from UNC.

Marc is editor at large of Guardian Sustainable Business US and blogs atNonprofit Chronicles. Marc is also a husband and father, a lover of the outdoors, a marathon runner, and a lifetime premium member of Net Impact.
